North West Cricket Association had its beginnings in 1923 when an enthusiastic group of cricketers decided to form a social competition of 6 teams to play each other at irregular intervals. This lasted for 5 years. They used to have their meetings at “Kirks Bazaar” which was at the intersection of Keilor, Bulla and Mt Alexander Roads in North Essendon on the site that is now currently (2004) occupied by a Bilo Supermarket. In 1928 seven local Progress Associations, Aberfeldie, Keilor Road/South Broadmeadows, Sydenham, North Essendon, St Albans, West Coburg and Glenroy, decided to form a formal cricket association and this was called the Northern Districts Progress Cricket Association. The first President was Mr C Cranwell and Mr L Enderby was Secretary. Some of those original 6 clubs formed the basis for the progress association teamsIn 1932 The Association was then called the North West Cricket Association with Mr Downs as President and Mr Andrew Shankland Knight as Secretary. In 1934 The Association changed its name to the Essendon District Cricket Association to reflect more properly the constituents of the Association. The Association went into recess in June 1942 because of the war and did not reform until 1947 when it reformed with 6 teams as the Northern District Cricket Association with Mr J Crosby as President and Mr M Wellard as Secretary. In September 1950 a further name change occurred and the Association was then called the Essendon-Broadmeadows Districts Cricket Association however this name did not last long and in August 1951 it reverted back to its pre-war name of Essendon District Cricket Association.Mr J Crosby was still President and Mr J Evans was Secretary.Because of the growth of suburbs north of Essendon yet another name change occurred in 1964, and the Association became the Essendon Broadmeadows Cricket Association with Mr J Holden MLA as President and Mr Aub Giddings as Secretary. In 1971 there was an influx of teams from the “new” area of Keilor and the Association added “Keilor” to its name and became the Essendon Broadmeadows Keilor Cricket Association (EBKCA).Mr Jack Davies was President and Mr Don McCabe SecretaryA final name change came in 1993 reflecting again the influx of teams from other areas, this time north of Broadmeadows and it became the North West Cricket Association Inc (NWCA). The history of NWCA is continuous apart from World War 2 from 6 teams in 1923 to 43 clubs and 242 teams in 2004 (64 senior; 37 Under 16; 45 Under 14;44 Under 12; 45 Under 10; and 7 Under 14 Girls catering for some 2700 players in 120 matches a week).[Based on some early notes from Messrs Giddings (dec) and McCabe (dec) and the subsequent detailed research by Terry Scott. This research is ongoing and should any person have any information that can assist in further developing the NWCA history please contact Terry Scott.Terry is currently trying to compile a full history of the Association and would welcome any input in particular concerning the 1960’s and 1970’s as information and statistics are a bit scarce]
